When did the STS get so cheap?

Did you know right now you can go onto craigslist and pick up a 320hp luxury sedan for 8k? And have the reliabilty of an American made automobile? Yeah me neither. But 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 154mph plus all the luxury amenities sure seem like an attractive offer. What say you Oppo NP or CP for this Titan of luxury?

My father in law has a 2006 Dodge Magnum RT (in Germany). I’ve driven it and I can totally understand why boats like that depreciate, and if I understand it correctly the STS is even more boat-like. I wouldn’t even spend $8k on a car like that with this age/mileage.

If it was the V6 for a little less cash, I’d say NP...but it’s a Northstar. They eat head gaskets and crap warped heads due to overheating.

Apparently around 2000 there was a change made to the angle of the head bolts or something. So yeah, a 2005 would be better than what I had (1998 DeVille Concours...neat car). And I guess the 3.6 still makes 250hp or so, same as my P71 Crown Vic...which means that yes, it's too slow, haha.

I’ve seen my fair share of newer northstars puking every fluid from every orifice and instrument clusters pretending they’re signs on the Vegas strip. Anymore if they get traded in, even relatively clean low mileage one owner examples will go straight to auction because they need so much work.

The problem want really the angle of the bolts. It was the fact that the threads would pull out of the block. Yeah, changing the angle helped a bunch, but the root problem is still there.

CP. I might consider giving them half or a little less. 99/1 weight distribution, handles like a drunk pig, very high maintenance engine (full disclosure, I used to be infatuated with that engine until I experienced then firsthand and owned one, never again) plastic fantastic interior that falls apart almost as fast as E36 interiors.

I’ve seen 2000-2005 V220 S55’s, C215 CL55’s and W210 E55’s in that price range. RWD and 350-500hp for under $10k? Awesome! Don’t trust their reliability? Well that E55 shouldn’t have any trouble hitting 4-500k miles without any big ticket failures provided you change its fluids periodically and throw in a crank sensor or two (things the Cadillac would likely need also, and still never hit that mileage!).

Mine was almost ten years old when I got rid of it. In the year I had it I had to put an obscene amount of money into it and it still lost 75% of its value in a single year.

I keep trying to talk my dad into one of these now that my parents are past the “need space to haul kids around” stage and the old Grand Caravan is dying. Won’t even consider it. Instead, he seems really set on an MKZ or convertible Mustang.

Bet if I got my mom to test drive one she’d convince him, though. Hoping that I can manage to coax them into a test drive because I think this car is perfect for them.

Kinja'd!!!0

Understandable, ABC is rather daunting.

01. New enough to have had the updated head bolt/block design. Still ended up putting every gasket and seal on it, crank sensors, both coils, flywheel (it broke!), engine mounts, multiple hubs, steering angle sensor, three sets of wheels and tires trying to chase a vibration, control arms, tie rods, multiple carbon clean services, two water pumps, seat heaters didn’t work and the transmission occasionally had an issue with the torque converter clutch. All that was maybe at 125k.

I currently DD an E430 with over 180k. I’ve put control arm bushings, ball joints, fluids in it. And the valve covers seep a little bit. And it was neglected by the previous owner. It needs a passenger seat weight sensor. Parts to fix everything on this car will cost me half of what just the engine reseal parts cost me on the Cadillac.

Once I take care of the sensor I plan on selling this thing and hopefully either getting an E55 or something old and fun.

Interiors on these aren’t bad at all. First true luxury car I ever rode in was a brand new 2005 STS. I was 13 or 14 at the time, my parents had just got divorced a month earlier and my mom started dating a Cadillac salesman by the name of Chris. I met him for the first time at my grandparents house. He, being filled in about my love of cars by my mom, offered to drive me home in his Cadillac. My moms car being a stick shift ‘87 Toyota 1-Ton Truck and my dad having a clapped out ‘93 T-Bird, I of course said yes. To this day I remember the smell of the leather, little speakers in the seats on either side of the headrest, and chrome “STS” plaque inlaid in the real wood dash trim. I thought to myself “Oh yes. Now THIS is a car.” All the sadness over my parents split momentarily went away and for the first time that summer, things looked up.

10 years later, they’re married, he’s running his own Cadillac dealership, and every single car in our driveway has a little wreath and crest on the keys.

Perhaps if it’s the first time you’ve ever been in a luxury car. Personally, I’m willing to bet that the inside is as plastic as the average Jersey housewife’s boobs. At some point, I may drag myself down to my nearest buy-here-pay-here lot and find out for sure.

I haven head of a magnetic filter that supposedly helps with the ABC issue but I have not looked into it.

01 you say? I haven’t heard of those problems with the 05 plus but then again I have not looked into it a lot. But damn that is a lot of stuff.

And that sounds like resonably maintence for a used car with your E430. Hope you can sell it and get an E55 though that would be fun.

Not sure how they would quantify how helpful it is or isn’t. You would have to know exactly when something would fail. Sounds like a load of manure to me. If I had one I would just change the fluid and filter periodically, maybe every 2-3 years.

I did a ton of research on northstars when I owned it. It was my intention to junk the car and drop the engine into a classic Cadillac. But through that experience I’ve decided that engine isn’t worth the trouble.
